Smart meter

8th Oct: I am an npower customer and I have been told that when you put the smart meters in we have to pay for them ourselves is that true and if it is how much?

Asked by John from West Midlands, 08/10/2009.

John, there has been considerable media speculation over the cost of smart meters, and the honest truth is nobody knows how much they will cost. What we do know is that they won't cost as much as some media have suggested - of around £300!

Installing smart meters into homes will be Britain's largest infrastructure project since World War One. Projects of this size also provide economies of scale - there are over 50 million meters that need to be fitted, so this should bring the costs down.

The final cost of smart metering will be determined by Government, in terms of how they roll out the programme. We understand that the Government would like smart metering to be "revenue neutral", in other words, the savings you make cover the cost of the meter.
