Yes, we believe that 2020 is a reality - yes, there are some logistical obstacles as there’s a lot to be done. Decisions are still being made as to exact arrangements, but to give you an overview of how it might work we’re expecting there to be one national communications provider managing the technical side of metering. Energy companies – individually and as an industry – will work on marketing and raising customer awareness. Another important point is that suppliers must agree on using standardised technology, so smart metering won’t make it any more difficult for customers to switch supplier.
