26th Oct: How will these smart meters be powered and how much energy will they use? I bought an Efergy meter a while back and it cost me almost £60. Since then, I have spent a significant amount on providing batteries (6 AA cells) for it and they don't last long. This is not energy efficient or environmentally friendly. I hope the new meters will be better?

Smart meter

Stuart, a very good question that has yet to be answered! We're still waiting for government to decide how we roll out all of the smart meters throughout the UK and also which type(s) of communication will be needed - be it GPRS,SMS etc. At npower, we would prefer to give you a choice as to how you would like to receive the information from your smart meter - this could be a display unit, your computer, television or even your mobile phone.

We're currently working with meter manufacturers in the hope that when these display units do come out, that there are a number of different versions - some with solar cells, different colours, different shapes and different sizes. This will be vital as the display unit will need to become part of all of our every day lives if smart metering is to have an impact.
