Smart meters will be able to measure import, export - and generation. In fact, we're currently using smart meters that can do just that on our trials. There is no requirement for smart meters to have pulsed output, although Government have clearly stated that customers will be able to grant 3rd parties access to their data. The framework for how that access will be managed will be developed over the coming months. As always, data privacy and security are absolute key considerations as the Government and the industry develop the solutions and operating rules for smart meters.
