Smart meters will change the way that you and your energy supplier interact.
They offer two way communication so that meter readings can be taken at any time during the day, which means all your readings and meter information will be automatically sent to us and no more visits from the meter readers. In effect, you will only pay for what you have used.
This will all happen in real time so, just think - no more estimated bills, the ability to see how much energy you are using and more importantly having the facility to monitor how much you are spending. Good for the wallet, great for the environment!
The exact frequency of readings is yet to be decided, but smart meters will make billing much more accurate and supply customers with real time consumption data.
For those customers on our Feed in Tariffs and those who have solar panels, the new smart meters will show you how much electricity you are selling back to the grid and how much money you're making. You will also have the flexibility to decide when to sell back to the grid, like during peak times of the day when you can make the most money!
Smart meters will also make choosing and changing tariffs easier. We are still trialling this, but tariffs such as Economy 7 will still be available so you can monitor and save even more money during peak periods.
It is going to be a little while until you can get a smart meter. We're currently running trials with a small number of customers so we can see how best to use the technology for everyone, but we don't need to recruit any more customers just yet.
But this doesn't mean you can't start saving money now. In the mean time, head on over to http://www.npower.com to start using our online Energy Tracker and to read more about forthcoming smart meter developmets.
