29 Jul '10: I wanted to join a Smart Meter trial a while ago but was not able to because the mobile phone signal near to my meter was not strong enough. Will I ever be able to join it? I use mobile phones elsewhere around my house with ease. What will happen with my account if the government is pushing for everyone to join?

Smart meter

Thank you for your interest in our trials and I'm really sorry to hear that we couldn't go ahead with your installation as a result of poor signal strength.

Don't worry though - you won't be left out when the UK wide installation begins! www.energychoices.co.uk/every-home-to-get-a-smart-meter-sooner-than-planned-270710.html

The smart meters we're using in our trials use SMS technology (the same technology as text messages) and the Vodaphone network.

If SMS - or GPRS (what you use when you're browsing the internet on your mobile or when emailing multi-media messages such as photos) remain the communications method, then 'roving sim cards' will be used.

These will pick up and use the strongest signal for an area and so won't be tied to one specific mobile phone network. This means that, as you get a good signal from other networks, you'll still be able to have a smart meter in the future.
