19 Mar: How much electricity does the smart meter use and who will be footing the bill for the extra consumption - the consumer or the billing company?. By 2020 photovoltaic cell and storage battery technology should have made sufficient advances to make it feasible for households be independent of the grid so these meters may be obsolete before they are even installed.

Smart meter

Any power required by the smart meter will be taken before the power enters the property, so the costs will be not be borne by you. We're currently trialling smart meters with some of our customers using microgeneration (ground source heat pumps etc) and these meters can measure how much is energy is generated and returned to the Grid, so customers can be paid for the electricity they have exported, so the meters will still have a place.
