Smart meters have a built in communications device, which enables them to automatically send meter readings to your energy supplier. For example, the smart meters we're using in our trials have a SIM card in them - similar to a mobile phone, which send us meter readings by a secure text message. This is fine for small trials but it's unlikely to be suitable when everyone has a smart meter so a form of low power radio technology could be used?
