19 Mar: Given the government mandate for smart metering by 2020, am I as a consumer going to have to pay for a service that mainly benefits the supplier and distribution companies but provides me nothing at all other that the ability to see my bank balance reducing as I pay for my ever increasing energy bills?

Smart meter

The Government has mandated the provision of smart meters in order to achieve carbon reduction targets. All energy suppliers will be obligated to help customers cut down their energy use, through new, innovative tariffs and better information, which in turn will help customers to find ways of reducing their usage and also save money.

Early feedback from customers on our smart metering trials has been very positive. The information provided through the smart meter has made them more aware of how much energy they use and when; all of their bills are based on actual meter readings - and more importantly, many have seen their costs reduce.
