What are smart meters?
Smart meters will be able to provide up to the minute information about energy consumption displayed through an ‘in home device’, or even a PC or mobile phone, allowing you to make much more informed decisions about how you use your energy. Smart meters will also communicate with energy suppliers in a much more dynamic way, so estimated bills will be a thing of the past.
What’s the plan?
The arrival of smart meters means big changes for energy suppliers and customers. The government has committed to the mass roll out of smart meters from spring 2014. That means the installation of 53 million smart meters in 30 million homes and small businesses across Great Britain by 2020 – one of the biggest national infrastructure projects ever! Whilst this is a great challenge it is also a fantastic opportunity with the government reckoning there’ll be a benefit of over £7 billion to the nation over the next 20 years.
