30 Apr: My dual fuel supplier is EDF. I send my readings when prompted by email. Despite this I have had a guy insisting that he has to read my meter today even though I've just had this quarter's bills based on my own readings. He says EDF require yearly readings and that the last reading was Jan 2009. I have phoned EDF who tell me that npower is responsible for the readings though he doesn't know which contractor and that my last reading was October 09 and that the legal requirement is 2 years which is ok with them. It's a wasteful long running and totally unnecessary duplication of resources and a major nuisance as I have to stand and argue with this guy every time he calls.Your advice please …

Electricity companies are legally obliged to inspect meters at least once every couple of years, but we actually try to do this twice a year. It's really important for gas and electricity companies to have regular, up to date meter readings as we need to make sure your account is on track - any that you're paying the right amount. You don't want to be paying any more than you should be!
