29th Jun: Which resources are the most popular and better for the environment out of coal and wind power?

Asked by Samira from West Midlands, 29/06/2009.

Wind power is very much better for the environment given that it comes from a totally renewable resource and does not have any impact on climate change in the way that burning fossil fuel does.

We are the leading wind farm operator in Britain with 410 turbines currently operating across 22 wind farms with a combined capacity of 423.2 MW hours – that is enough to supply roughly 140,000 homes.

At the moment we are building a further three wind farms which will have a total of 53 turbines and an output of 152.4 MW hours. We are planning another 602 turbines across 30 farms.

Having said all that – as a nation we still rely heavily on coal and gas fired power stations to provide the energy that we need to go about our daily lives. So we are investing millions of pounds researching different ways of removing carbon dioxide before or after fossil fuels are burned, to minimise the environmental impact. We are currently running the country’s first carbon capture tests at our power station at Didcot.
