We need to keep some fossil fuel power stations running to make sure there is enough electricity to power Britain’s homes, hospitals and workplaces. A mix of different kinds of power generation is also the best way, in the long term, to guard against energy price shocks. Two out of three of our coal fired power stations will close by 2015.
