16 Mar '11: What proportion of the electrical power that you generate comes from gas and where does this gas come from?

Control room

We own four gas-fired power stations across the UK, with a combined capacity of over 4000MW, which is enough to power around 7 million homes. In 2012 our new, state-of-the-art gas-fired power station at Pembroke will also come into operation, which at 2000MW will provide power for around three and a half million homes.

We buy gas to supply our customers with, and also to use as fuel for some of our power stations. We buy our gas from the wholesale markets, where it is sold as a commodity from various sources. Some of the gas comes from the UK, some will come from Europe and Russia, and increasingly the UK buys Liquified Natural Gas, or LNG, that is shipped from all over the world, including Africa, the Middle East and Australia.
