02nd Sept '11: There are so many people who have vested interests in 'green energy' these days. All attempt to portray their particular interest as best. How can choices be made about the best ways to generate 'green energy' without full and frank knowledge of ALL the facts both positive and negative in a non-technocratic way? Shouldn't the Government insist on this?

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your question.

One form of generation - be it green or otherwise, will not satisfy current energy demands. We need a stable base such as nuclear, supplemented by renewable sources like wind, marine and solar.

Ofgem estimates that around £200billion will be need to be spent by 2020 just to keep the lights on and you are absolutley right to suggest that public engagement is crucial.

The Government is insisting that Britain moves to a 'low-carbon economy', and we support this move. Our CEO has been calling for a partnership between the public, government and energy companies. Only this way, can we minimise the cost, inform the public and secure our energy needs for generations to come.
