How green is npower

Wind farm

Everyone needs reliable, affordable energy, sourced in a way that respects the planet we live in. This is one of our generation’s greatest challenges. The Brighter Energy Debate has already started the conversation on the UK’s energy challenge and at npower we believe in an open, informed debate which allows everybody to ask questions on the energy issues facing us all.

Around a third of UK power stations will have to close down by the end of the decade as they come to the end of their lifespan. Some plants are nearing the end of their lifetime - others may also have to close due to new environmental standards.

Ofgem, the energy industry's regulator, estimates that up to £200bn is needed to be invested in the next decade to provide all the energy we need and to develop cleaner, affordable energy sources for the future. It's a huge challenge.

We're already investing: over the last three years RWE has invested over £1 billion a year in cleaner, modern generating technology. Our new power station in Staythorpe that opened in November 2010 is the UK's most efficient gas powered power station; next year, this title will go to a larger and even more efficient plant that we're developing in Pembroke, South Wales. Combined, the two stations will provide electricity for more than seven million homes.

We're proud of our green credentials - RWE is one of Britain’s largest wind farm operators and we're investing billions into low-carbon power generation.  We also operate one of the largest and most diverse portfolios of power generating plant in the UK, including gas, coal, biomass and oil-fired power stations, along with Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant and renewables facilities. Through our joint venture, Horizon Nuclear Power, we're developing up to 6GW of new nuclear build in the UK for the future. Our challenge is to move to low carbon generation, while maintaining affordable and secure sources of energy.
