11th Nov: Why are energy bills so high at the moment?

Asked by Mr Frost from West Midlands, 11/11/2009.

Energy bills are currently high because wholesale energy costs - especially the cost of wholesale gas - have risen dramatically over the last couple of years. The UK now imports around 40% of its gas, which means we are buying energy on a global market and, due to increased demand for energy from countries like India and China, prices have been pushed up.
