11th Nov: Why don’t you explain how electricity is traded and bought in advance to help justify why prices can be high or low at times?

Control room

We buy energy through a mixture of long, medium and short term contracts on the wholesale market, so there is always a time lag between when the wholesale price rises or falls and when customers' domestic bills rise or fall. Energy companies also aim to 'smooth the curve' of significant price changes so that customers don't see the sudden spikes in pricing.
