17th Aug: How come your electricity is so expensive compared to French electricity bought in France? I do recognise that French electricity bought in England is still about the same price as English electricity. Your biggest cost of production is the fossil fuel price, which went up when your electricity prices went up, but have fallen back so significantly from the peak in summer 2008 (more than halved) but your prices have become virtually static in comparison. Why don’t you buy electricity from France then sell it to us? It would be half the price, you would have NO production cost and no one would feel like they’re being ripped off.

Electricity in France is generally cheaper than in the UK because most of it is generated through nuclear power stations. This means that the French energy market there is not as open to the volatility of wholesale energy prices. Last year, in the UK, wholesale energy costs rose by over 200% - whereas our own prices only went up by 26% (gas).

Getting our electricity supplies from France would be fine – if we all lived in the South East of England. Unfortunately, the more miles energy has to travel through cables and wires, the more power it will lose.
