25 May: I have been paying by direct debit for many years. My use of energy has not changed much in over 5 years and yet at each review date my direct debit amount changes dramatically, last time from £55 to £180 per month. Whilst I appreciate that this was to clear a debt (as £55 was far too low) why aren't your systems sufficiently intelligent to predict usage and therefore the amount I should be paying in the first place? I am also concerned that as the bills are now issued every 6 months rather than every 3 months, it is even harder to monitor if my payments are correct or not. Is it possible to move back to quarterly billing?

The system that we use to review accounts and generate monthly direct debit payments works well and is one of the most robust in the industry according to the findings of an independent OFGEM report.

You can help to make your payments as accurate as possible by taking meter readings at regular intervals and sending them to our customer services area. If we are relying on estimated bills it will take longer for us to identify a problem.

We bill people on a six monthly cycle as this is more cost effective and enables us to make savings that we can pass on to our customers.
