06 Sept '10: Hi, I have read on the web that these smart meters will in the future be able to control your home appliances. How will they do that? I've read that there's Zigbee as well as bluetooth. Which one is npower going to use? Are the current smart meters that you're installing compatible with this or will we all have to have another smart meter installed in a year or two as the technology gets better?
12 Aug '10: I am about to change over to npower. At the moment I am with First Utility and have smart gas and electricity meters fitted. How long will it be before you can make use of these new meters?
12 Aug '10: When are these smart meters going to be fitted to customers in the London area?
12 Aug '10: Which of the following will smart meters measure: Import - obviously yes. Export? Generation (PV wind Hydro etc.)? Will there be any output pulsed or other for use by 3rd parties for displays etc? If other than pulsed what output will it be? If no output (!) will we be able to place additional meters in these lines? To give 3rd party possibilities.
29 Jul '10: I wanted to join a Smart Meter trial a while ago but was not able to because the mobile phone signal near to my meter was not strong enough. Will I ever be able to join it? I use mobile phones elsewhere around my house with ease. What will happen with my account if the government is pushing for everyone to join?
20 Jul '10: Hi, will small businesses be able to market and supply your smart meters?
12 Jul '10: How do we get a Smart meter? Just watched the Wallace and Gromit advert. They sound like something we need sooner rather than later??
12 Jul '10: After having had new meters fitted some 5yrs ago and by paying by monthly direct debit for all gas and electricity, I have refused to have a Smart meter fitted due to the fact that I do not wish anyone to be drilling holes in our kitchen wall. Our meters are fitted close to the outside meter houses meaning any such meter would be in close proximity to the 30 Watt existing incoming power line. I read in today's Times that this practise has been deemed an invasion of privacy in Holland and that the scheme has been halted it is because of the data that is provided by these meters is so accurate that if you put your kettle on it will be registered so as mentioned it is a breach of privacy rights your comments on this would be interesting. What is the legal obligation of fitting Smart meters?
12 Jul '10: Does a smart meter ever have to be inspected manually?
21 Jun: Hallidays Hydropower installs small hydro electric schemes. The electricity generated is metered and connected to the nearest three phase grid point. Meters are installed at the site owner's premises to record how much of their new green electricity they use (and hence how much electricity they don't have to buy). Any excess is sold to the power company or an energy broker. A few questions please: * The electricity that the site owner receives is not bought through a power company but instead directly replaces the electricity they would otherwise buy from a power company. If another local consumer wants to buy this locally produced green electricity will a smart meter enable the reporting of this? * Could therefore 50 local houses all have smart meters enabling them to consume this green electricity? * How much does a smart meter cost to buy and install?
8 Jun: Are you going to use Google Power Meter with your new smart meters? I have been told it is excellent and first:utility already use it. I hope you do. Cheers!
8 Jun: Will the smart meters be able to incorporate renewables input i.e. solar pv systems or will yet another meter be required?
SMART METERING TRIALS UPDATE: We've been running a number of smart metering trials over the last 14 months. So, what do customers think about them? Do they like them? And are the meters actually changing how customers use their electricity?
MESSAGE FROM NPOWER: We're still getting a lot of requests for our home energy monitors, and smart meters.
